Le 100e anniversaire du sauvetage de Shackleton de l’Endurance Crew sera commémoré lors de ‘Endurance Semaine’ du 24 au 31 Août 2016.
En Novembre 1915 navire ‘Endurance’ Shackleton a été écrasé par la glace, l’échouage de l’équipage dans l’Antarctique. Après un voyage de 346 miles à travers la glace et en bateau ouvert l’équipage a atterri sur l’île Eléphant où ils hivernent. Shackleton et quelques autres, cependant, ont continué par bateau ouvert 750 miles au sud de la Géorgie. Dans un ultime effort pour obtenir de l’aide Shackleton et deux hommes ont marché 32 miles à Stromness pour élever une partie de sauvetage. Cela a pris trois mois, mais le 30 Août 1916 tous les hommes de l’équipage d’endurance a été finalement sauvé.
Cette épopée de ce remarquable exploit seront commémorés durant la « Semaine Endurance » qui est un événement «porte ouverte» pour toute personne ayant des liens avec la recherche et l’exploration polaire.
